Is it ok to question God?
There are many different concepts behind the idea of “questioning” God. One way to question God is to ask God for information. Another way to question God is to ask for confirmation. A third way is to question or doubt the quality of God's character. Each of these areas deserves further investigation.
Is it acceptable to question God in order to obtain more information about an issue?
James 1:5-8 Habakkuk 1:12-2:3
Matthew 12:1-5 Matthew 7:1-8
Deuteronomy 29:29
Our knowledge is limited, God's knowledge is infinite. As a result the difference in our knowledge should lead us to ask God to help our knowledge and understanding. We do have to respect God's unwillingness to answer some questions. The answer to some of our questions will forever remain as one of those secret things about which only God will know and deal with. It is a secret thing that belongs to God alone.
Is it acceptable to question God in order obtain confirmation about an issue?
Joshua 9:8-16 Exodus 3:10-15; 4:1-9
Judges 6:36-40 John 5:37-40
1 Samuel 14:6-13 Proverbs 11:14
It is not uncommon to wonder what should be done at particular moments in time. It is acceptable to seek God's counsel during such times. Sometimes the answer will come from a direct revelation of God. Other times the answer will come from the words of God. Other times the answer will come from the counsel of multiple people of God. It is wise to seek confirmation about what we intend to do.
Is it acceptable to question God's wisdom?
Exodus 4:10-16 Jonah 4:1-11
Isaiah 55:6-10 Job 40:1-8
Romans 8:27-30
God's answer is infinite. As such, God can see and understand things that we cannot. We must learn to trust that what God has done, He has done for a purpose and trust him to work it all out to glorify His name and to proclaim the Holiness of His character.
Is it acceptable to question God's answer?
Proverbs 3:5-6 Acts 5:34-39
Jeremiah 42:1-7; 43:1-3 Ezekiel 12:27-28
God has demonstrated Himself to be faithful to His perfect nature and character as such God's answer is always the final answer. If God delivers an answer, accept it and follow what God said. To do otherwise is to fight against God.
