What prophecies were fulfilled in the death of Jesus?

The fulfillment of prophecy is a significant issue in the scriptures. It identifies true prophets of God (Deuteronomy 13:1-5; 18:22). It demonstrates that YHWH is the one and only true God (Isaiah 43:9-11). The subject of fulfilled prophecy is very extensive so only a portion of those prophecies associated with the death of Jesus will be evaluated.

  1. What prophecies are there about Jesus' betrayal?

Psalm 41:9; 55:12-14 Matthew 26:47-50

Luke 22:47:48

Zechariah 11:12-13 Matthew 26:15-16; 27:7-10

Leviticus 27:1-4 Exodus 21:32

The Messiah was to be betrayed in some fashion by a very close friend for thirty pieces of silver. It is interesting to note that there is a special personal offering that can be made that is to be accomplished with a payment of silver. A male who makes the vow is considered worth 50 shekels of silver and the female is considered worth 30. When Judas obtained 30 pieces of silver as payment for Jesus, the priests and Judas were prizing Jesus at the worth of the female instead of the male.

  1. What prophecies are there about Jesus' trials?

Zechariah 13:7 Matthew 26:56

Mark 14:27

Psalm 35:11-12; 109:2 Matthew 26:59-60

Psalm 38:11-14; 39:2 Isaiah 53:7

Matthew 27:12-14 1 Peter 2:23

Micah 5:1 Matthew 26.67

Isaiah 50:6 Matthew 26:67-68; 27:30

Isaiah 52:14

The Messiah was to be abandoned by all of his friends to face his trial all alone. At the trial, witnesses would be sought out but only false witnesses would be found. Though he is accused falsely, the Messiah would not fight back. During the trials, the Messiah would be hit across the mouth. The Messiah willingly offered up himself for the punishment that others would (improperly) deliver to him.

  1. Where prophecies are there about Jesus' crucifixion?

Psalm 22:16 Zechariah 12:10

John 19:34-37; 20:25-29

Isaiah 53:9, 12 Mark 15:27-28

Luke 22:37; 23:39-43

Isaiah 53:12 Luke 23:34

Psalm 22:7-8 Matthew 27:39-43

Psalm 22:18 John 19:23-24

Psalm 22:1 Matthew 27:46

Psalm 22:15 Psalm 69:21

John 19:28 Matthew 27:34, 48

Psalm 22:20; 31:5 Matthew 27:43

Luke 23:46

Old Testament prophecies identify that Jesus was to be crucified (pierced) in the midst of sinners. The people's rejection of him while he is on the cross and their ridicule of him as well as the gambling of his clothing. Reading Psalm 22 with Mathew 27, Mark 15, Luke 23, and John 19 should draw out a whole series of prophecies and their fulfillment at the cross of Jesus Christ.

  1. What ramifications should these fulfilled prophecies have for us?

John 3:12 Isaiah 43:9-11

1 Corinthians 15:1-4 1 Peter 1:18-19

Fulfilled prophecies are there in order to encourage us to believe that when God says that something will take place, that it will in fact take place. The specific prophecies regarding the death of the Messiah should encourage us to know and to remember the reality of the crucifixion of Jesus on my behalf and the fact that the only reason that Jesus died is because he willingly offered up himself for me in order to redeem me unto himself.
