Why should Christians vote and be involved politically?
Within Christian circles, there are multiple issues around political involvement. There are those who believe that a Christian must never be involved with politics, including not even voting while others believe that Christians are duty bound to be involved. Part of the issue then is to understand how involved to be.
What is the Christian function within society?
Matthew 5:13-16 Mark 9:47-50 cmp Luke 14:31-35
Colossians 3:17, 23-25; 4:5-6 Matthew 28:19-20
Acts 8:1-4 Romans 12:17-21
1 Timothy 2:1-3 1 Peter 2:11-17
The ultimate and primary function of every Christian is to bring for the Gospel of Jesus Christ into all of the world. While here, we are to be salt and light in and to the world. We are to be a type of stabilizing or leveling agent for the culture. We are to do what we can so that as Christians we can live peaceably and Christ focused lives.
What is the God given role of government?
Romans 13:1-7 1 Peter 2:14-14
Deuteronomy 17:14-20 1 Samuel 8:19-20
Proverbs 8:13-17; 20:8; 24:23-25; 25:2
The primary job of the government is to execute justice. He is to protect the weak from the strong and to ensure that the wicked do not get away with whatever comes into their hands. In order to properly carry out his job as a servant of God, which is what he is to be, he must know and rule within the decrees of God.
What is needed in the secular government?
Proverbs 14:33-35; 16:10-14; 20:26-28; 25:4-5; 29:14
More than anything else, the government needs righteousness. It needs to be righteous so that it will rule according to truth and righteousness. It must not pervert justice and judgment but follow and obey what is right and true.
How can the government carry out its God given role?
2 Samuel 23:3 Proverbs 29:2-4
1 Samuel 15:1-11 Daniel 2:20-21
In order for the government to properly execute its task, it must recognize the supreme authority of God and diligently seek to obey Him in everything. The government must be comprised of people who fear the Lord and know that they are but servants of God first. Therefore in order for government to be correct in the eyes of God, it must be established and run by people who fear the Lord and not fear man.
